Abstract
This study was done to assess whether Korean red ginseng(KRG) affects prognostic markers in HIN-infected individuals. Daily dose of KRG was 5.4 grams. Hematoimmunologic tests were performed at 3 and 6 months for 23 of 27 patients. Lymphocyte
percentage(%) did not change at 3 months, but significantly decreased at 6 months(p<0.05). Body weight increased significantly after 6 months(p<0.05). Mean CD4+T cell percentage increased from 16.2¡¾5.17% at baseline to 17.66¡¾8.05% at 3
months(p<0.05)
and to 20.07¡¾8.96% at 6 months(p<0.05). CD8+T cell percentage also increased significantly(p>0.01). Two of 23 patients showed serum p24 antigen at baseline and the level seemed to be suppressed during KRG take. These findings suggest that KRG
take
has
positive effects on HIV individuals not only by the increase of CD4+ T cell percentage but also by the increase of CD8+ T cell percentage with cytotoxicity for HIV.
